INTRODUCTION

The main product used in the ceramic craft is clay. After being subjected to heat, clay becomes a very hard material.

Plaster molds are used to make the ceramic pieces known by us as greenware.

El producto principal utilizado en la cerámica es el barro. Luego de éste estar sujeto a cierta temperatura se convierte en un material muy duro.

Moldes de yeso son utilizados para hacer la pieza de cerámica conocida como crudo.

When slip (liquid clay) is poured into the mold, the plaster absorbs the water from it leaving a layer of clay on the inner surface of the mold. The remainder of the slip is then poured off, and the casting can be removed.

Cuando el barro líquido o barbotina se echa dentro del molde, el yeso absorbe el agua dejando una capa de barro pegada a la superficie del molde. El exceso de barbotina se saca del molde y la pieza puede ser removida.

After the greenware has been removed from the mold, it has to be cleaned. This is a very important step because any imperfection will show through the paint.

To clean the greenware you:

1. Gently scrape diagonally across the seam lines with the triangular end of the cleaning tool. 

 

Despues de remover el crudo del molde, la pieza debe limpiarse. Este es un paso muy importante ya que cualquier imperfección se reflejará a través de la pintura.

Para limpiar el crudo debes:

1. Raspar suavemente en forma diagonal las costuras o líneas de la pieza con la cuchilla para limpiar.

2. Smooth away any surface imperfections with a circular movement of a grit sponge.

 

2. Con movimiento circular y usando una lija de esponja, elimina cualquier imperfección en la superficie de la pieza.

3. Using a wet natural or synthetic sponge, wipe away any scratches remaining on the greenware.

 

3. Usa una esponja húmeda para eliminar cualquier defecto que haya quedado en la pieza.

The following step is to fire the greenware. This is done using a ceramic kiln.

 

Quemar la pieza es el próximo paso a seguir. Esto se logra utilizando un hormo cerámico.

After the greenware is fired, it is known as bisque.

 

Después de ser quemado el crudo, éste se conoce como bizcocho.

The ceramics techniques that you will find here will give you a basic knowledge of the materials used in the decoration of bisque and greenware.
